Bare New Decks and Patchy Old Stain in Oshawa
A new pressure-treated deck in the far north end usually goes in bare, and the wood needs time to dry before it will take stain evenly. Leaving it unfinished for years is the other mistake. The sun greys it, the boards check, and the first stain job then needs heavy sanding to get back to good wood. The goal is to stain it as soon as it's dry enough, not three summers later.
Decks in the established neighbourhoods further north have often been restained a few times, and the finish ends up a patchwork: solid colour on the railings, a faded semi-transparent coat on the floor, bare grey along the path to the door. Fresh stain over a peeling finish won't stick, so failing coats get stripped first. Then we sand down the raised grain and lay on even coats without lap marks.
Deck staining needs the right weather: above 10°C, with no rain for 24 to 48 hours. In spring and fall those stretches can be short. Oshawa is an easy drive for us, along the 401 or Highway 2, and we're over there regularly, so a deck here can usually be fit in when a good stretch of weather comes up. How deck cleaning & staining works
Power wash
First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.
Sand
Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.
Apply stain or sealant
One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.
Dry and inspect
The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

How long should I wait before staining the new deck on my north Oshawa house?
New pressure-treated lumber is often still wet from treatment, so it needs to dry before stain can soak in. Sprinkle some water on a few boards. If it beads up, give it more time; if it soaks in within a few minutes, it's ready. Depending on sun and weather, that can take a few months. We'll check the wood when we come out to quote.
My Oshawa deck has peeling solid stain. Can I switch to a semi-transparent one?
Yes, but the old solid stain has to come off first. A semi-transparent stain soaks into bare wood and won't hide what's left underneath, so any leftover patches will show through. That means stripping and sanding, a fuller deck refinishing job that takes longer and costs more than a simple recoat. If stripping isn't practical on a particular deck, staying with a solid stain is the honest alternative.
