Power wash
First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.
Sand
Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.
Apply stain or sealant
One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.
Dry and inspect
The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Can the railings on my Whitby deck be a different colour from the floor?
Yes. Two-tone decks are common: a darker, harder-wearing stain on the floor where feet and furniture scuff it, and a lighter or solid shade on the railings and spindles to match the house trim. It takes more taping and cutting in, so it costs a bit more than one colour throughout. We'll price both options so you can compare.

Yes, sun is the hardest thing on a deck finish. UV breaks down the stain and greys the wood underneath, so a sunny deck usually needs recoating at the short end of the normal range. A semi-transparent stain with more pigment holds up better than clear deck sealing, which does little against UV. Checking the floor each spring tells you when it's time.
