Deck Cleaning & Staining in Uxbridge, ON

Strip the grey. Seal the wood.

There's a lot of forest in Uxbridge township, and a deck tucked in under the trees stays damp long after a rain. That's where the green film and black spots come from. Decks out in full sun have the opposite problem and grey from UV. Our deck cleaning & staining in Uxbridge handles both, and each deck gets washed, sanded and stained so the wood is protected again before winter.

Shaded Woodlot Decks and Sun-Bleached Ones

Shade is the slow problem. A deck under a canopy of trees collects leaves, needles and pollen, and the boards underneath never fully dry. Mildew moves in, the surface turns slick, and the old stain gives up early. Railings and stair treads under the drip line of the trees tend to be the worst. Before any new finish goes on, all of that growth has to come off, and the first step is a wash at a pressure the wood can handle.

Sun is the fast problem. Out on a lot with no shade at all, UV breaks down the stain and greys the wood, and the boards check and splinter as they dry out. Once water stops beading on the surface, the protection is gone. We sand those decks after washing to knock down raised grain, then lay the stain on evenly so it dries without lap marks.

Plenty of Uxbridge decks get some of both, shaded at one end and baking at the other. Before any deck staining starts, we look at how each section has worn and talk through stain choices with you, since more pigment means more UV protection. Cleaning and staining a standard 10x12 deck usually runs $400 to $800. A power wash on its own starts at $150.

Pedro handles deck cleaning, sanding and staining. For how he approaches deck cleaning & staining in general, see our deck cleaning & staining page.

How deck cleaning & staining works

  1. Power wash

First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.

  2. Sand

Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.

  3. Apply stain or sealant

One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.

  4. Dry and inspect

The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Deck Cleaning & Staining in Uxbridge: FAQ

Our deck goes green every summer under the trees. Will new stain fix that?

Stain helps, but it won't beat shade and damp on its own. We wash off the mildew, let the deck dry, then sand and stain, which gives the wood a surface that sheds water better. Keeping leaves and needles swept off, and rinsing the deck each spring, will do as much as the stain to keep the green from coming back.

Should we pick a solid stain or a semi-transparent one?

Semi-transparent shows the grain, and it's what we usually recommend for Ontario weather. Plan on redoing it every 2 to 3 years. Solid stain hides worn, patched or mismatched boards better and lasts 4 to 5 years, but it can peel, and it's hard to go back to a semi-transparent look later. Tell us how the deck looks now and we'll help you choose.
