Deck Cleaning & Staining in Port Perry, ON

Strip the grey. Seal the wood.

Decks around Port Perry often go green before they go grey. Damp air near Lake Scugog lets mildew and algae settle into the grain, especially on boards that see little sun. Our deck cleaning & staining in Port Perry starts with a proper wash to lift that growth, then sanding and a fresh coat that keeps water out of the wood through another freeze-thaw winter.

Clearing Mildew From Port Perry Decks Before Staining

Stain brushed over mildew is money wasted. The growth keeps spreading under the new coat, and the finish blotches or peels within a season. So the first visit to a green deck is a cleaning: a wood-safe cleaner to kill the growth, then a wash at a pressure low enough not to fuzz up the grain. The boards need several dry days after that before they'll take stain evenly.

Timing is the tricky part at a cottage. Owners want the deck ready for the first long weekend, and spring weather doesn't always cooperate. If it stays wet, a late-summer or early fall stain works just as well, and it sets the wood up nicely for winter. Deck sealing before the cold arrives means the boards go into the freeze-thaw season with water beading off them rather than soaking in.

For deck staining near Lake Scugog, we usually suggest a semi-transparent stain and plan on recoating a little sooner than you would on a deck far from the water. Shaded boards on the north side of a cottage tend to wear first, so we look at those closely when we quote. For a standard 10x12 deck, a clean and stain is usually $400 to $800.

How deck cleaning & staining works

  1. Power wash

First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.

  2. Sand

Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.

  3. Apply stain or sealant

One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.

  4. Dry and inspect

The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Deck Cleaning & Staining in Port Perry: FAQ

Do you offer deck cleaning & staining in Port Perry?

Yes. Port Perry is part of our Durham Region service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.

Why does one side of our deck turn green while the rest stays fine?

That's almost always shade and moisture working together. Boards under trees or on the north side of the house stay damp longer after rain and morning dew, and mildew and algae take hold there first. A cleaning knocks it back, and a fresh coat of stain slows it down. Trimming branches to let in more sun and air helps the stain last longer on that side.

Can you have our cottage deck stained before we open for the season?

Often, yes, if it's booked early and the weather plays along. After cleaning, the deck needs a few dry days, then temperatures above 10°C and no rain for 24 to 48 hours once the stain goes on. If spring stays wet, we'll talk with you about moving it to late summer instead of rushing a coat that won't last.
