Deck Cleaning & Staining in Pickering, ON

Strip the grey. Seal the wood.

New pressure-treated decks in Seaton and older decks around Rougemount and Bay Ridges need different handling, but both need a finish to last. We offer deck cleaning & staining in Pickering across the city, and the rural area north of Highway 7 is covered too. The work goes in order: a wash, a dry spell, a sanding, then stain applied evenly so you don't get the lap marks and blotches of a rushed job.

First Coats in Seaton, Recoats Near the Waterfront

A brand-new pressure-treated deck shouldn't be stained the week it's built. The lumber is often still wet from treatment, and stain can't soak in until it dries out, which may take several weeks or most of a season depending on the wood and the weather. Leaving it bare for years is the opposite mistake, since sun and rain go straight to work on unprotected wood. For a new Seaton deck, the first coat is mostly about timing.

Older decks near the waterfront have the opposite problem: layers of old stain, some of it peeling, over wood that stays damp longer in the lake air. Stain over a failing finish won't hold, so we strip what's loose, wash off the mildew and sand back to sound wood before recoating. For this kind of deck refinishing, a solid stain often works best, since it hides patched boards and weathering better than a semi-transparent one.

Pickering's suburban backyards usually fall somewhere in between. A deck in semi-transparent stain needs a recoat roughly every 2 to 3 years, and solid stain lasts about 4 to 5. Cleaning plus staining on a standard 10x12 deck usually runs $400 to $800, and a power wash alone starts at $150. We need 24 to 48 hours of dry weather after staining, so we book around the forecast.

How deck cleaning & staining works

  1. Power wash

First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.

  2. Sand

Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.

  3. Apply stain or sealant

One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.

  4. Dry and inspect

The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Deck Cleaning & Staining in Pickering: FAQ

Do you offer deck cleaning & staining in Pickering?

Yes. Pickering is part of our Durham Region service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.

Our builder put in a pressure-treated deck at our Seaton house last fall. When should we stain it?

Give it time to dry first. Sprinkle a little water on the boards. If it beads up and sits on top, the wood is still too wet and stain won't penetrate. Once water soaks in within a few minutes, it's ready. For many new decks that's sometime in the first summer. Clean it before staining, since a new deck still collects dirt and construction dust.

Green moss is growing between the boards on our shaded Pickering deck. Will cleaning and staining fix it?

Cleaning removes it, and we scrape out the gaps between boards so water can drain again. Stain helps by keeping water out of the wood. Moss does come back on decks that stay shaded and damp, though, so trimming overhanging branches and keeping leaves swept off will make a bigger difference over the long run than any product we put down.
