Hand-Brushed Trim on Port Hope's Brick Houses

Gothic Revival houses often carry carved or scrolled trim along the gables, and Victorians have plenty of their own detail around windows and doors. Paint on that wood takes more weather than paint on a flat wall, and it fails first in the cracks and end grain. We scrape off what's loose, sand the edges smooth, prime anything that's down to bare wood and apply the finish coats by brush, since detailed profiles need a brush to get paint into every recess.

Single-pane wood windows need their own approach. When we paint a sash, the paint laps just onto the glass, which helps seal the glazing against rain. We also keep paint out of the channels so the window still opens afterward. If a sash is already stuck, we cut it free carefully before painting rather than prying it. Good exterior painting on these houses leaves every window working.

Inside, plaster takes paint well once it's sound, but old walls usually carry hairline cracks and patches from decades of repairs. We fill and feather those until they disappear under the new finish, and we prime fresh patching compound so the sheen stays even. The newer residential areas are quicker work for a house painter, and they get the same two coats on walls and trim.
