Home Repairs in Port Hope, ON
Fixed at the cause.
The streets around Walton Street are full of brick Victorians and Edwardian houses with plaster walls, solid wood trim and original hardwood floors. Those materials shape how we approach home repairs in Port Hope. Pedro's background includes a lot of work with older building materials, and our habit is to repair what's there and only replace something if you ask us to.
Fixing Trim, Floors and Doors the Old Way
Solid wood trim from the 1800s was milled in profiles you won't find at a building supply store. When a piece of baseboard or casing is split or water-stained, we try to save it: glue and clamp the crack, harden any soft spots, then fill and sand. If a length really has to go, we work out a close match instead of dropping in a flat modern board that stands out across the room.
Old hardwood floors squeak, and boards lift or split near doorways. Most squeaks can be fixed by fastening the board down from below or from the top with a hidden screw. A damaged board can be swapped for one taken from inside a closet, where nobody will see the patch, because new wood never quite matches a floor that's aged for well over a century.
Original panelled doors and their hardware are worth keeping too. A door that won't latch usually needs its hinges tightened or shimmed, or the strike plate moved a hair, and a seized old mortise lock can often be cleaned and freed up. When a home repair turns out to have a deeper cause, such as a ceiling stain under a bathroom or a soft sill under a window, Pedro's inspection background helps him trace it back to the source.
Pedro handles drywall, door, fixture and water damage repairs. For how he approaches home repairs in general, see our home repairs page.

Home Repairs in Port Hope: FAQ
Do you offer home repairs in Port Hope?
Yes. Port Hope is part of our Northumberland County service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.
Our old hardwood floors open up gaps between the boards every winter. Should we fill them?
Usually not. Dry winter air shrinks the boards, and the gaps close again as humidity returns in summer. Rigid filler gets crushed or pushed out when the wood swells back. Gaps that stay open all year are a different matter, and those can be filled with thin wood strips glued to one side. A humidifier in winter also helps.
Can you fix a creaky staircase without pulling up the treads?
Often, yes. If the underside of the stairs is open, we can glue and screw blocks under the treads and tighten the wedges from below without touching the finished surface. If it's closed in, we drive small screws through the tread into the stringer, countersink them and fill the holes. Old stairs rarely go completely silent, but most of the noise can go.
