Construction & Installation in Port Hope, ON

Built by a builder.

Some projects need a builder more than a handyman. On rural lots and in town, including behind the heritage homes on the older streets, we take on construction & installation in Port Hope. Pedro's 16 years in construction count here, and when the house is 19th-century brick, he'll help you plan a backyard structure that sits comfortably beside it instead of looking like it came from a big-box kit.

Building New Next to Old in Port Hope

If your lot is designated, individually or inside a heritage conservation district, check with the Municipality of Port Hope before anything gets built. Its heritage approval covers new construction and additions, and the designation applies to every structure on the lot, including a shed or garage at the back. The town also won't issue a building permit for a designated property until heritage approval is in place, and there's no fee to apply.

Even where no approval is needed, a pergola or shed behind a Victorian house looks better when it borrows from the house, with a similar roof pitch and trim that doesn't clash with the original. Where the structure sits matters too, since a shed tucked to one side leaves the back of the house in view. We talk those choices through at the consultation, along with measurements and materials, before any posts go in.

Out on the rural properties around Port Hope and along the Ganaraska, the work is more practical: storage sheds and footings that have to sit on uneven or damp ground. In the newer residential areas it's usually a shed, a pergola over the patio or a framed basement room. A basic shed typically runs $2,000 to $5,000, and every project gets a written proposal with the timeline and total cost.

Pedro handles sheds, fences, structures and installations. For how he approaches construction & installation in general, see our construction & installation page.

Construction & Installation in Port Hope: FAQ

Do you offer construction & installation in Port Hope?

Yes. Port Hope is part of our Northumberland County service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.

Our yard catches wind off the lake. What should a pergola builder do differently?

Anchor it properly. Posts should sit on solid footings with hardware that ties them down, and the joints between posts and beams need bracing so the frame can't rack. An open slatted roof lets wind pass through. A solid roof catches wind like a sail and needs a heavier frame to match. We size all of that before quoting.

Can you frame a wall in an old basement where the foundation walls are uneven?

Yes. We build a separate stud wall set slightly in from the foundation, so it doesn't touch the damp masonry and can be plumb no matter how wavy the old wall is. Any moisture problem needs sorting out before the framing goes up, otherwise it ends up trapped behind the new wall where nobody sees it until it's done damage.
