Deck Repair in Courtice, ON

Fix the rot before it spreads.

A railing that shifts when you lean on it, or a stair that has pulled away from the frame, usually means trouble below the boards. Deck repair in Courtice covers decks that went in with the 1980s and 1990s houses as well as newer ones north of Bloor Street. The first thing Pedro looks at is the framing underneath, since the framing decides if it's a repair or a rebuild.

Big Backyard Decks on Established Courtice Streets

Behind the established homes, a deck built with a 1980s or 1990s house has been through decades of Ontario winters if it's original. Posts set straight into the ground or in shallow holes are the first thing we check. Rot starts where wood meets soil or concrete, and frost can heave a footing that wasn't set deep enough, which shows up as a sag or a stair that no longer lines up.

Railings deserve a hard look on any deck that sits high off the yard. Posts that were notched and bolted to the rim joist tend to loosen as the bolts wear the wood around them. A railing that moves under your hand should be fixed before anyone leans on it at a barbecue. Deck railing repair can be as simple as through-bolting a loose post, while full replacement runs about $20 to $50 per linear foot.

On a big deck, the repair-or-rebuild question comes down to the framing. If the joists and ledger are solid, new decking and railings can give you years more for a fraction of a rebuild. If they've gone soft, starting over is the better use of your money, and as a deck builder Pedro starts a rebuild with proper footings. A rebuild on a small deck starts around $3,000, and a larger one costs more. Pedro will come by and put the options in writing either way.

Pedro handles deck repairs, board replacement, railings and new deck builds. For how he approaches deck repair in general, see our deck repair & building page.

How deck repair works

  1. Inspection

We go over the whole structure: boards, joists, posts, hardware, railings, and where the deck attaches to the house.

  2. Diagnosis and quote

We tell you exactly what has to be replaced and what can be saved. The written estimate lists the materials out.

  3. Repair or build

Bad boards come out and new ones go in. If the framing underneath needs work, that gets done first. New builds start with proper footings.

  4. Finishing

We sand, then stain or seal as needed. A deck that's finished properly lasts years longer than one left bare.

Deck Repair cost in Courtice

Replacing boards usually costs $15 to $30 per board, depending on the material.

New railings run about $20 to $50 per linear foot.

A full rebuild of a 10x12 pressure-treated deck is typically $3,000 to $7,000. Height, complexity and local conditions decide where in that range it lands.

Every job gets a free written estimate first, so the price is settled before work starts.

Deck Repair in Courtice: FAQ

How do I tell whether my deck's original posts are still sound?

Push a screwdriver into the post right at ground level, or where it meets the concrete. If it sinks in easily or the wood crumbles, there's rot. Also look for posts that have twisted or pulled away from the beam. It's common for one or two posts to go while the rest are fine, and those can be replaced individually with the deck supported temporarily.

My deck boards are fine but the whole deck moves when we walk on it. What's wrong?

Bounce or sway usually points to the structure. The joists may be undersized for their span, or the posts and the ledger connection may have worked loose. Sometimes adding blocking and bracing stiffens it right up, and sometimes it means new framing. Pedro will get under the deck and tell you which before you spend anything.
