Keeping Roof Water Away From Older Foundations

A foundation that's stood for a hundred years wasn't built with modern waterproofing. What it handles worst is a steady stream pouring over a blocked trough onto the same patch of ground every time it rains. That soil stays soaked, it pushes against the wall when it freezes, and damp patches start to appear in the basement. Clear troughs and downspouts that empty well away from the house are the cheapest protection an old foundation can get.
