Deck Cleaning & Staining in Brighton, ON

Strip the grey. Seal the wood.

Stain on a Brighton deck has a tough job. Damp lake air keeps the boards wet longer, the summer sun bleaches them, and mildew moves in where it's shady. Our deck cleaning & staining in Brighton washes that off, sands the wood smooth and lays down a fresh protective coat. Plenty of owners like to have it done before the busy months start in May.

Keeping Mildew Off Brighton's Lakeside Decks

Mildew is often the first thing we notice on decks near the lake. It shows up as dark grey or black patches, mostly on boards that get little sun, and stain won't bond properly over it. We pre-treat those areas, wash the whole deck and let the wood dry fully before sanding. Damp lakeside weather can stretch the drying time, so we check the boards themselves rather than going by the calendar.

Exposure is the other half of it. Waterfront and lakeshore decks around Brighton get full sun and wind-driven rain, so a clear sealer alone won't hold up long. Deck sealing keeps water out, but stain adds the UV protection the wood also needs, which is why we usually suggest a semi-transparent stain. On older boards that have weathered unevenly, a solid stain can even things out. Either way, stain only goes on above 10°C with 24 to 48 dry hours ahead.

With the seasonal population climbing from May on, the best time to book is before then, or in early fall once things quiet down. Washing alone, with no stain, starts at $150. Deck refinishing for a standard 10x12, cleaning and stain included, usually runs $400 to $800, and bigger decks with railings and stairs cost more, since all those edges take longer.

How deck cleaning & staining works

  1. Power wash

First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.

  2. Sand

Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.

  3. Apply stain or sealant

One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.

  4. Dry and inspect

The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Deck Cleaning & Staining in Brighton: FAQ

Do you offer deck cleaning & staining in Brighton?

Yes. Brighton is part of our Northumberland County service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.

Why does the stain on my deck wear off the steps first?

Steps and the main walking path take the most foot traffic, and grit tracked up from the yard acts like sandpaper. Steps also sit lower and stay wet longer. A maintenance coat on the high-wear areas between full restains can help, and we can match the colour so the touch-up blends in with the rest of the deck.

What can I do between stain jobs to keep my deck in better shape?

Sweep off leaves and needles, since wet debris holds moisture against the boards. Move planters and mats now and then so they don't trap water in one spot. Rinse off mildew before it spreads, and keep the gaps between boards clear so water drains through. Small habits like these stretch the time before the next full restain.
