Deck Cleaning & Staining in Campbellford, ON

Strip the grey. Seal the wood.

Decks around Campbellford wear out two ways: damp air near the river turns them green, and open sun out in the country bleaches them grey. Our deck cleaning & staining in Campbellford deals with both. We wash the boards at a pressure that won't fur up the wood, then sand and stain once they've dried, so the deck sheds water instead of soaking it up.

Mildew by the River, Sun Out in the Country

Riverside decks in Campbellford tend to turn green before they turn grey. Moist air and shade let mildew and algae settle into the grain, and the boards that see the least sun develop a slippery film. Left alone, that film holds moisture against the wood and speeds up rot. A pre-treatment and a careful wash lift it off, and a light sanding afterward knocks down any grain the water raised so the stain goes on evenly.

Where a deck sits in full sun, the problem is UV. It breaks down the stain and bleaches the wood, and the boards facing south start to check and splinter. A semi-transparent stain needs recoating every 2 to 3 years and a solid one every 4 to 5. If you can't remember the last coat, sprinkle some water on the boards. When it soaks in instead of beading, the wood is unprotected.

Deck staining needs dry wood and cooperative weather. We look for temperatures above 10°C with no rain forecast for a day or two, and we'll move the date if the forecast changes. A wash on its own starts at $150. On a standard 10x12 deck, cleaning plus staining is usually $400 to $800. Add railings, stairs or extra square footage and the price goes up.

How deck cleaning & staining works

  1. Power wash

First we clean the deck with a pressure washer to get rid of dirt, mildew, old stain residue and surface grime.

  2. Sand

Once the deck has dried, we sand it to knock down raised grain and give the stain a smooth, even base.

  3. Apply stain or sealant

One or two coats of deck stain go on, applied carefully so you don't end up with lap marks or patchy spots.

  4. Dry and inspect

The deck needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. If needed, we come back for a final look.

Mildew keeps coming back on our deck by the river. Will a new coat of stain stop it?

It helps, but it won't stop it by itself. Mildew grows where wood stays damp and shaded, and a fresh stain that sheds water gives it less to work with. Trimming back plants that crowd the deck and washing it each spring make a bigger difference. If you'd rather not handle the spring wash yourself, we can put you on the list for one.

Our deck is out in the open and gets sun all day. Should we go lighter or darker with the stain?

More pigment gives more UV protection, so a semi-transparent or solid stain will outlast a clear finish in full sun. Very dark colours get hot underfoot on a summer afternoon, though, and fading shows sooner. A mid-tone usually balances the two. Solid stain lasts longest between coats but hides the grain, so it comes down to the look you want.
