Deck Repair in Ajax, ON

Fix the rot before it spreads.

Plenty of Ajax backyards still have the deck that went in when the house was new, and after many winters of freeze-thaw, the soft spots start to show. We handle deck repair in Ajax for townhouse platforms and the bigger decks behind detached houses. Pedro checks the joists, posts and ledger board before quoting, so you know whether a few new boards will do or the frame needs work.

Original Decks on Tight Ajax Lots

Ajax is one of the more densely built parts of Durham Region, and the backyards show it. Decks often run close to the fence, with little room underneath and a neighbour a few feet away. Repairs in that setting mean working in tight spaces, so we replace boards and framing one section at a time and keep the rest of the deck usable while the work goes on.

Most original builder decks are pressure-treated lumber, and what fails first is fairly predictable. Board ends split and cup, fasteners back out after years of the wood swelling and shrinking, and posts set straight into the soil rot at ground level. The part you can't see is the ledger board, where the deck fastens to the house. If water has been getting behind it, that's the repair to make before anything cosmetic.

Deck board replacement usually runs $15 to $30 per board depending on the material, and new railings about $20 to $50 per linear foot. When the frame is past saving, a full rebuild of a 10x12 pressure-treated deck is typically $3,000 to $7,000. Pedro will tell you which of those your deck needs, and why. If the fence next to your deck has started to lean, it's worth looking at both on the same visit.

Pedro handles deck repairs, board replacement, railings and new deck builds. For how he approaches deck repair in general, see our deck repair & building page.

How deck repair works

  1. Inspection

We go over the whole structure: boards, joists, posts, hardware, railings, and where the deck attaches to the house.

  2. Diagnosis and quote

We tell you exactly what has to be replaced and what can be saved. The written estimate lists the materials out.

  3. Repair or build

Bad boards come out and new ones go in. If the framing underneath needs work, that gets done first. New builds start with proper footings.

  4. Finishing

We sand, then stain or seal as needed. A deck that's finished properly lasts years longer than one left bare.

Deck Repair in Ajax: FAQ

Do you offer deck repair in Ajax?

Yes. Ajax is part of our Durham Region service area, and we work there from our base in Bowmanville. Call or text (289) 928-5689, or request a free estimate online.

Our Ajax deck is only a step off the ground. Do low decks rot faster?

They can. A low deck gets very little airflow underneath, so the joists stay damp longer after rain and snowmelt, and leaves pile up where nobody can reach them. We check the framing from below where we can fit, lift a few boards where we can't, and replace anything soft. Clearing debris out from under the deck once a year helps it dry out.

Can you rebuild just the stairs on my Ajax deck?

Yes. Stairs often go first because the stringers sit close to the ground and soak up water. We can rebuild the stairs and handrail on their own and match them to the existing deck as closely as the lumber allows. New wood will look different from weathered boards for a while, so plan on staining the whole deck once the new lumber has dried out.
