Many homeowners aren't sure whether their project needs a handyman or a licensed contractor. The distinction matters — choosing the wrong type of professional can mean overpaying, delays from permit processes, or work that doesn't meet code requirements.
Here's a practical guide to making the right choice.
What a Handyman Does
A skilled handyman handles general repairs, maintenance, and small-to-medium improvement tasks that don't require trade licensing. This includes carpentry, painting, caulking, minor plumbing and fixture work, deck repairs, drywall, and dozens of other common household tasks.
The advantage is cost and flexibility — handymen charge lower rates than licensed tradespeople and can handle a variety of jobs in a single visit rather than coordinating multiple specialists.
What a Licensed Contractor Does
Licensed contractors (electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, general contractors) are required by law for specific scopes of work in Ontario. They carry specific trade licenses, pull permits, and have their work inspected by municipal authorities.
They're the right choice for: full renovations requiring permits, electrical panel work or new circuits, gas line work, structural modifications, new construction, and major plumbing rerouting.
Choose a Handyman When...
- The job is repair or maintenance rather than new construction
- No permit is required for the work
- The scope is one or several related tasks a generalist can handle
- Budget matters and the work doesn't require specialized licensing
- You need flexible scheduling for multiple small tasks
Choose a Licensed Contractor When...
- Electrical, gas, or structural work is involved
- A building permit is required
- The project is a full renovation or addition
- Warranty or insurance requirements specify licensed tradespeople
- Local codes require licensed work for the specific task
The Grey Area
Some projects sit in the middle — a bathroom refresh, for example, might involve tile work and fixture replacement (handyman territory) plus running a new electrical circuit (licensed electrician required).
An experienced handyman will tell you honestly what's within their scope and when to call a specialist. If they're not upfront about that, that's a red flag.
